Trip Log: Days 28–40
Day 28
The day started with the ultimate combo of excitement, a flu shot and a haircut. Talk about living the dream. 😎 After surviving both, I spent the rest of the day with my niece Pam, my sister Roseann, and my brother-in-law Andy. A solid recovery plan after 27 days on the road.
Day 29
Still battling a cold, which seems to be winning on points. I spent most of the day with my sister Connie, which helped take my mind off the sniffles. We hung out, laughed a lot, and later went to our favorite Chinese restaurant, the Oriental Plaza. The weather has been beautiful here, almost hit 60 today. Practically beach weather for November.
Day 30
Car day! I got some maintenance done, treated the car to a well-deserved wash, and then headed to Fort Lee to see my friends Craig and Jeff. We caught up for a while, then Jeff and I tried a good Chinese restaurant. I had soup dumplings for the first time, and I’m convinced they’re tiny miracles in a bowl. We forgot to take a picture with Craig, next time.
Day 31
Dinner with my niece Pam, my sister Roseann, and my brother-in-law Andy, followed by some time with my good friend “Pink Sneaker Dave.” Yes, he earned the nickname from his pink converse sneakers.
Day 32
I went to lunch with my brother-in-law Andy, then visited my sister Connie. We ended up going out to dinner, because apparently I’m on a full-time restaurant tour. The weather hit the high 60s today, which felt like a gift from the travel gods.
We went to O’Neill’s for dinner, a traditional Irish pub. I ordered a corned beef sandwich that was absolutely amazing. I haven’t had a good one in a long time, and this hit the spot perfectly.
Connie went with a crab cake sandwich, and she said hers was excellent too. I’d definitely go back there, maybe even before the end of my trip.
Days 33–36
I headed down to the Jersey Shore for a spiritual weekend in Long Branch, New Jersey, at the beautiful Ocean Place Resort & Spa. It wasn’t exactly beach weather, more like “bundle up and admire the waves from indoors” weather, but the ocean view and cold wind still managed to recharge the soul.
Days 36–40
I drove down to Manahawkin, New Jersey, to visit my friends Steve and Cathy. We caught up, laughed a lot, and met up with some other friends. Their two golden retrievers, Toby and Cali, made sure I didn’t miss a single opportunity to throw a ball. They made sure to use me as a recliner much of the time.
We all had a great time, full of good food, old stories, and a lot of tail wags.
