This morning I slept in a bit. Sean was the best host, he made breakfast that included his world-famous whole grain Irish soda bread. I had to try it. All healthy stuff in there, it was so good. He asked if I liked it, and I said, “If I have any more, I’m going to eat the whole loaf.” 😎
After breakfast, I drove to Hyannis to catch the ferry to Nantucket. It was cold and windy, the kind of wind that cuts right through you. I layered up with my Under Armour ColdGear 3.0, a sweatshirt, and my new winter jacket, which turned out to be one of the best decisions of the day.
Once we arrived in Nantucket, that jacket zipped up fast. My first stop was the Whaling Museum, which was fascinating, especially the story of the Essex, the doomed ship that inspired Moby-Dick. I climbed up to the museum’s rooftop deck for photos. It was beautiful, but I was the only fool up there battling the wind. 😎
Next, I walked to Brant Point Lighthouse. The walk wasn’t far, but the wind was right in my face the entire time. I didn’t see a single person on the way, and I checked my GPS several times to make sure I wasn’t lost. Then the rain started, and up went the hood. The lighthouse itself was small but picturesque, worth the trek. On my way back, I finally saw two couples heading that way, but otherwise, the streets were quiet. Most people seemed to have taken shelter in shops, restaurants, or museums.
By about 3:30 p.m., I was finally ready for food, so I grabbed a lobster roll and coleslaw. I skipped most of the bread and went straight for the lobster. It was delicious, and since it was late, that officially became dinner.
When I boarded the 4:30 ferry back, it was packed. I was thankful I hadn’t booked the 8:00 p.m. ferry, I couldn’t imagine waiting around in the cold and dark for that. The ride back was rough, the waves tossed the boat around like a wooden roller coaster. I kept my eyes off the water and hoped everyone kept their lunch down, including me.
By the time I reached my hotel in Providence, I was ready to call it a night. Tomorrow, I’ll explore Providence and Newport, and Thursday I’m hoping to head to Block Island, weather permitting. 😎
