Day 21: Still Chasing Lighthouses, Lobsters, and Enlightenment

Today started off with some fall flair. As I left my hotel, I noticed a few trees showing off their red leaves. I have seen plenty of those this trip, and apparently, the northern states all got the memo.

I began my morning exploring the west end of Portland. There were lots of fun shops and art galleries.

Next stop was the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was much more impressive than yesterday’s lighthouse. There was even a wedding happening. I overheard the bride saying, “Why are all these people here, we reserved this place.” I guess she's going to be a bit disappointed. 😪

From there, I drove to Kennebunkport, another town full of kids of water and cool shops. One store was filled with beautiful stones and crystals. Funny enough, when I visited a huge version of that shop in Calgary, I only bought a few. But today, in this tiny little shop, nine stones spoke to me, so now they are all coming home with me.

The lake nearby was gorgeous and even had a Halloween-themed cemetery.

There was also a man playing fetch with his dog in the lake, surrounded by beautiful houses that probably cost more than my car, my house combined.

After that, I made my way to the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, which was absolutely breathtaking. The rocky coastline was so peaceful that I sat down and meditated for about ten minutes, mainly to absorb the beauty and partially to recover from all the stairs.

Next, I stopped in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a fun, walkable town with great shops. I even made a cameo on the Portsmouth webcam in Market Square. Fifteen seconds of fame, achieved.

Then I toured the USS Albacore Submarine, which was fascinating. It was used during WWII.

Finding a hotel was its own adventure. I wanted to stay in Salem, Massachusetts, but the prices were scarier than the witches, over $500 for the cheapest room. I ended up 20 minutes away for almost $300, and let’s just say it was nothing special. I am bracing myself for the Halloween weekend crowds tomorrow.

Dinner saved the day though, Brown’s Seafood. Wow, one of the best lobsters I have ever had. I even got to pick my own. The guy showed me a five-pound monster, but I passed. I am not ready to wrestle my dinner yet. If I lived up here, I would have to eat lobster at least once a week. 😎

Tomorrow’s plan is to spend the day in Salem, explore all the spooky stuff, and then head to Monte’s Pizza in Lynn, Massachusetts. Dave Portnoy gave it his only perfect 10. We will see what this New Yorker thinks. 😎
